Photoshop tutorial

Feb 2nd, 2008

So we have our first tutorial! It is a photoshop rendering tutorial by Zdenek Borysek, author of the M.L.K concept. He will explain the basics of a photoshop rendering in ten stages. And here he comes:

1. at the beginning we have a sketch just in lines, basicly scanned from your napkin or directly made in computer (as I did)
this layer is mostly turned off or deleted so don´t worry.

If we want to import to our picture scanned sketch, just change the blending mode to “multiply” (then we can put other layers under our sketch and we can still see it) I usually work on A3 (300dpi) in case of high quality print.
2.I have put in this step some new layer and put it underneath our sketch..

3.We have selected the silhouette of the car with Pen_Tool, made a selection (we are still in colorful “background” layer)
and then we have made a new layer Via_copy, we have left the original layer at opacity 80% (to see the difference)
The color of the car is not definitive, we could change it whenever we want.

4. here we add some highlight reflections with Brush_Tool. It is better to use different layer for each area, we can easier control the edges highlights with Eraser_Tool (for really straight Edges we can use the Pen_Tool as well) and when we are done, just merge the layers

5.and same thing we do with black colored brush.. reflections from the ground

6.now is´s time to put some black(or whatever) color as tires and shadow under the car, and I just made a new layer via copy from original body layer.. made a selection in greenhouse area and then changed a color (later we can make a selection and in a different layer add some reflections to highlight the glass material..

7. I have made some wheels (just a base) but it is easy to do, just make eliptical selection to fit the intended rim.. then
transform the selection and delete the middle of the rim.. and also we did some cutlines and main lines with PenTool

8a,8b. it´s time to make some rear lamps design.. it is “modelled” by many layers to bring the deepness and the realbrightness as well..

9.this could be the rear end with rear lamps and place for licence plate

10. let´s do some rims, I like to do my own, I don´t use any blured photographs because I don´t mean my sketches too photerealistic..so I prefere really basic and maybe not too real ones.. we do it in new layer and also with PenTool make selections and erase the holes between beams, I usually copy first one to the next one and enlarge it into the wheel arch..

well now just add some details and basicly that´s it.

I have to say, this is not just a sketch, I did so many “preparing” ones, so the design is not just a randomly vomited something.
It is very easy to do some effective photoshop renderings but please don´t. Think first!

  3. Dear Zdenek Borysek,

I am a 13 year old who is obsessed with cars. I am highly interested in designing them for the future and i have drawn very creative sketches that i think may be be like Luigi Colani’s. What i am looking for is a software that is either cheap or free so i can get an idea of what car designing is like. I am already sketching am i feel that i need to know more about perspective. PLease reply to me. :)

  4. Christian, as a car designer the first thing you want to master is sketching skills. All you need is regular pen and paper, you do not need any software at this point. Practice your line quality, perspective and proportions. Study photographs of cars, look at reflections and how they describe the surfaces. Go out and sit in a parking lot and sketch cars in different angles, go close and draw details like lights, how the a-pillars merge with the hood/fender.
Use markers, start with a few grays, and apply the lighter values and black first, use the whole range of values. Markers work best on dedicated paper, not cheap printer paper, experiment.
You can do all this on a computer also, but using paper is a lot more direct, cheaper and faster too.
I suggest you get a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS and Alias Sketchbook Pro as soon as possible because you need a lot of time to learn these programs properly, and not worry about the price so much, spend time saving money while you practice on paper. You can also look for used software on craigslist. Next buy a cheap scanner so you can get those hot sketches in the computer, and consider obtaining a sketch pad from Wacom after that.

  5. Exelente muy buen manejo de tecnica tanto como de sketch como de dibujo y photoshop tienen muy buenos tutoriales.

  6. Dear Christian I totally agre with Peter, first thing to do is sketch sketch sketch! At the same time I suggest you to start getting info about a good serious specialized car design school and understand what you need to have before you apply to avoid bad surprises.

When you sketch PLEASE do not try right away to go on Photoshop because First you learn how to sketch improuving your skills and then you can try to learn how to use Photoshop, got the point?
On my blog you will find some advices…..Ciao and good luck! Do not hesitate to ask..

  7. Message to Christian:

Peter has given you some great advice.

    Except two things I think.

You cannot be a good designer focusing pureley on drawing existing cars.

Its great practice and I agree wholly with a lot of what peter says about going out and observing real cars in a parking lot, a sketching as much as possible using pen & paper.

But take your time to enjoy other forms, and draw a much wider range of things freely.

A great thing to practice perspective and understanding of form and space is landscape & architectural drawing.

You would be amazed how cool a simple sketch of a few buildings can look when the perspective is tight & spot on.

Draw fun things, whatever you enjoy, cartoons, people whatever.. take it easy explore stuff and have fun.

Ok and the thing which I thought was rather silly that peter said, was for you to purshase both photoshop and alias.

Those applications are ridiculously expensive, and as a 13 yearold they are not even worth considering buying.

Practice rendering with traditional media like markers & pastel for the mean time which are actually very easy to use after getting to grips with it.

And then when you start to understand how to render, where to place light, reflections etc to make things look glossy or matte. Its a good time to move to computer.

Everything you wouldve learned already is directly appliable, so you will be proficient straght away. Drawing masks with vector paths/shapes etc. rendering with soft airbrush etc.

You can get applications to do all of these thing very effectiveley for free.

The GIMP is a free photoshop equivalent, Artweaver a free corel painter style app.

They are very good, with only a few difference you wont notice.

You will get to use photoshop & specific design apps like Alias in a few years at school.

What you learn in the free programmes is exactley the same as these expensive ones.

  8. hi,

  9. Hey, brilliant sketch by sketch webpage.. lol not so great TUTORIAL, it didnt really tutor me as I would have hoped, but a step by step image process was still good.

I love how you guys are mentioning Photoshop, price and expensive in the same sentence lol!!

  10. I found your blog via Google while searching for photoshop cs tutorials and your post regarding looks very interesting to me. I could not believe the amount of quality material on this site. The site is extremely eyecatching and pulls the reader straight it, the articles are great quality and are very professionally written. I have seen too many of these sites where it looks like they pay an 8 year old to do the writing - Not this one. Your site is easily the best that I have seen in a long while.
